Introduction: A U.S. customer is in the process of developing a new machine, which includes both a commercial and consumer version. In the prototype phase, they opted for Buhler gear motors, specifically a 12V spur gear motor. However, the Buhler gear motors didn’t meet their speed requirements, prompting the customer to explore alternative motor options.
Work Scenario:
In the customer’s application, the motors only need output a single direction, running for 30 to 45 seconds each cycle, with a 60-second idle time before the next duty cycle. The gear motors would not stall in his design, and the target lifecycle is set at 40,000 duty cycles, equivalent to approximately 500 hours of continuous operation.
Challenges:
- The customer purchased Buhler gear motors online without detailed performance specifications, apart from the 12V voltage rating. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to ascertain motor speed and torque requirements from a sample photo alone. For a motor to perform optimally in the customer’s product and avoid potential damage, knowing torque, speed, and voltage is essential.
Solution: After several rounds of communication, the customer recognized the value of our professional expertise and service. Consequently, they agreed to send us samples for testing, following our request. Upon receiving the customer’s samples, we conducted tests and determined that Buhler motors had sufficient torque but required an increase in speed.
- Our gear motors had mounting hole configurations that differed from Buhler’s. The customer preferred to retain the same mounting hole arrangement without altering their product design.

A Small Interlude: During initial testing of our motors in the customer’s prototype, there were challenges with motor startup. It took at least 20 seconds to reach full speed, which was unacceptable. The customer attributed this issue to our motor’s quality. However, further analysis revealed that the problem stemmed from the customer’s power supply, which had current limits. The issue disappeared after changing the power supply.
