Background:
A European pet product manufacturer approached us to test 37mm diameter DC gear motors to rotate a plate in their pet food distributors, already in the market for sales. The company faced a challenge with their current gear motors from another supplier, as the gears were breaking, leading to stalled motors and potential damage.
Challenge:
The pet food dispensers relied on motors to rotate a plate, causing croquettes to drop into the bowl. Occasionally, croquettes would get stacked at the exit, resulting in blocked gear motors. Stalling caused high torque and current, damaging gears and motors. This explained why their present gearbox motors were experiencing gear stripping issues.
Moreover, the company are not clear the motor specifications they need. They chose a model from our
website’s datasheet for test.
HT-SOG37D:
Nominal voltage: 12V
No load speed: 10RPM
Rated torque: 40kg.cm
On-load speed: 9RPM
Solution:
Based on our engineers’ expertise, we advised the customers that a torque as high as 40kg.cm might not be necessary for rotating the plate in pet food dispensers. More powerful motors were more prone to gear damage when stalled. We suggested they test the first gear motor samples with the following specifications:
HT-SOG371:
Nominal voltage: 12V
No load speed: 10RPM
Rated torque: 30kg.cm
On-load speed: 9RPM
However, the first samples failed after the customer’s field test due to stripped gears. Upon receiving their
feedback, our engineers analyzed their test data and determined the appropriate torque for their application. We adjusted the motor’s performance accordingly and, simultaneously, used hardened and tempered gears to create new samples.
Nominal voltage: 12V
No load speed: 10RPM
Rated torque: 18kg.cm
On-load speed: 9RPM
Conclusion:
The second set of samples passed the customer’s field test, successfully resolving the gear motor issues. The customer was delighted with the improved quality of our product.
DC gear motors are highly customizable products. For different applications, understanding their working scenarios is essential to design motors that seamlessly integrate with your products and run efficiently.
In conclusion, our engineers’ expertise and a collaborative approach allowed us to identify and resolve the gear motor challenges, resulting in a satisfied customer and a successful application for pet food dispensers. At HOTEC MOTOR, we take pride in delivering tailored solutions that ensure optimal performance for your specific needs.
